It’s interesting about the public display of affection aspects. My Thai girlfriend is more than willing to hold hands, or have our arms around each other, in public places. She often instigates it. However, she forbids kissing in public, even if there’s nobody within 100 meters of us. She has informed me that it’s not something a respectful Thai lady should ever do.

Thais must always be respectful but some dont show respect to foreigners because thats what they see on tv. All of us are teached to be respectful from young.

I HAVE lived in various parts of Thailand and I can tell you that these rules should be followed. Sure, you’ll find young naklengs that flout traditions and try to imitate loose Western morals (or lack thereof) as they see portrayed in movies and music videos, but relationships that are really worth cultivating will flourish if the rules are followed. Just as in any country, in Thailand you will find respectful, classy people, trashy people, and everything in between. I highly recommend being a respectful tourist.

Thanks Matt, I think Dao doesn’t actually live in Bangkok, but is of Thai descent. Perhaps her views were taught to he by her parents while living in a different country.

Most of this would be true if we lived in the world painted by the guidebooks, but the realities are quite different. Not all Thai girls are conservative, and most of the girls I know have to problems with hugging, kissing or holding hands in public.

I guess the younger demographic is somewhat more “radical” than its predecessors. But what’s that about sandals and shorts not being allowed in the city? Have you been to Thailand?
