A Visit to the Mor Doo Fortune teller - Part 1

Part 1
Okay I’m going to try something a little different here. Or rather my wife is. That is, with your permission…Some time ago I was talked into paying the local ‘Fortune teller’ a visit. The first part of this trilogy of submissions has been written by my tee ruk (darling), Part two and three by myself. She felt after reading my somewhat sarcastic rendition of events she should be given the chance to explain in her finest English her reasons behind her beliefs in such matters. It would have been quite easy for me to have written it for her, even tried to make more sense of everything for her but I decided not to. Anyway she was quite happy with her explanation and didn’t want me meddling with it. Make of it what you will…
Believe in something you can’t touch.
I believe everybody want to know about future. Almost all of all Thai women want to see fortune teller (experience by myself and persons who be around me, my friends, my sister, my sisters friends and my relatives). Why don’t I mention about men? Because I rarely not to see man at that place when I went to see Fortune teller.
We have many characters of Fortune teller. Monk is one. People who call themselves teacher (A-jan) is another style, almost they wear white costume. Another type of Fortune teller can sometimes just be same as normal people.
The fortune teller has many methods to process the input you give to them main one your birthday and time of birth then they calculate your birthday (time, date, day, month and year) by using formula. Every Fortune teller need to know your birthday.
Some Fortune teller will make concentrate (sit down and closing their eye) and tell you what happened. I suspect how come they know? Do they lie? Or do they have small ghost (Thai people call Look-Kok) to tell them?
Sometime someone ask us to pray and make concentrate (Nang-Sa-Ma-Thi) for one night (we need to wear all white costume). On the next day everybody will sit down in room together then teller will make concentrate (Nang-Sa-Ma-Thi) and tell us what is problem. Teller tells us all problems were happened because of old action that you did in last life or this life. They tell us many things same as they can see picture of events when they close their eye.
For some Fortune teller they use Tarot card (Gypsy card) or look at palm.
I’ve interested about Fortune teller since I studied in university when I was 19 years old (am now 33). At this time as student the main topic that we would like to know is about love…when we will have boyfriend? When we will get married? At that time we just have some friends who have learned how to do fortune and can answer these questions by reading the palm so no need to pay money, but this just for fun. (I also have learned from fortune teller how to read it from palm, but can’t remember all). Mostly after finishing university we would like to know about future of work…Will we get the job? Some parent is worried too much about their daughter and son so then they take their birthday and time of birth to see monk or Fortune teller so they can get information of their kids future.
I remember first time I saw fortune teller my friend told me that this Fortune teller is very good. Her mum went to see her often. Can you believe it even though its far… We still want to go. The house of Fortune teller is far from main road after sitting in car about 3 hour then we need to walk on the rope bridge, follow the map and asking people in that area for her house…Of course everybody knows this house.
My first feeling when I walk to that house I was scared. If I went there alone I don’t want to go because the surround was very quiet and not safe for women to go there alone. In that room has many sculls (Hua-Ka-Lok) and small boy dolls (Look-Kok) that wear Thai costume. This Fortune teller gave us paper to write down our birthday, time of birth and ask us many question that we need to know. Then she calculated and wrote down in table. After that she made concentrate, she told us please to be quiet during she did it because she need to ask ghost about us (ghost that she take care, maybe Look-Kok, I’m not sure). Our question was concerned about first job and love. I can’t tell you that its true or not because I forgot everything that she told us, it long time ago now.
I have seen about 9 Fortune tellers I believe in 6 Fortune tellers. I see fortune teller every year. Why I change Fortune teller? …Its same as buying goods when people recommend you by saying this word ‘Khao-Wa-Maen’ that mean its good so I want to try.
Actually I go to see Fortune teller about once per year but because I want to know what will be happen to me within 3 month. For this reason I practice to use Tarot card to read my future myself every 3 month. I believe in this card, some people said this card has some power that you can’t see. From my experience I think it is true.It almost happened same as card that I got both good and bad. When I got good card it is ok but when I got bad card it is so bad for me so I decide to stop reading it.
Other thing that I believe is dream. Initially at first I don’t believe in dream because people said you eat so much so you dream a lot. But the dream that make me believe is dreaming about the King. I dreamt that the King came to my house in my parents bedroom. So I found out about the meaning. I will have good luck, my life will be changed in good way… Next few months I got news of job at Singapore. Since that time I always notice about my ream and checking meaning (I have my favourite Thai website for checking dream) and checking the result within 3 month to see if it come true. Sometime I think I have sixth sense, dream always tell me what will be occurred within 3 month both good and bad. My husband finds it harder to believe so I always tell him about my dream so I can prove it to him when something occurs.
So because of this I ask him to go to fortune teller with me to see about our future.
You may not believe about it but you can prove for yourself same as you will test science logic. If you are suspect about something you can set up your questions and test them by yourself. Same as the teaching of Buddha, he didn’t teach us to believe anyone or anything until you can prove by yourself. Keep your mind open.

Fortune tellers seem to be everywhere in Thailand.
