    I found it easy to learn and remember colours in Thai; I hope you will too.

    If you want to say “the colour black” or “the colour red” in Thai you use the word ‘see‘ (ie. see dam = black and see daeng = red).

    But when you are using the colour as an adjective, you don’t need the word ’see’. For example, in English, you might say:

    I like the colour red.

    or

    I like the red shirt.

    In Thai you would say:

    Pom chawb see daeng.

    or

    Pom chawb seua daeng.

    Note that in English grammar we use adjective + noun (red shirt), but in Thai grammar we use noun + adjective (seua daeng). This is always true in Thai. It takes a little getting used to, but once you become accustomed to it, it feels natural when you speak the language.

    So, here’s a list of some basic colours in Thai:

    Dam = black

    Khao = white

    Khio = green

    Daeng = red

    Leung = yellow

    Meaung = purple

    Faa = sky blue

    Som = orange

    chumpoo = pink

    Naamtaan = brown

    nam-ngeun = blue

    taang = gold

    ngeun = silver (ngeun also means ‘money’)

    dtaw = grey
