The Sports Academy

I visited the Sports Academy last night and it was great. I went because my friend Jack called me and invited me to meet him there for a game of pool.
I hadn’t realized that Jack played pool, so it was a surprising offer, but once we were at the table I realized that he was better than me and I needed to raise my game. Fortunately the table we had was damn near perfect and it made it easy to be a better pool player.
We took a VIP room, which is rented by the hour. I think they have several of these, but the one we got had a fantastic position. The bar is on the second floor, above the Seafood Palace restaurant next to Asok BTS skytrain station. Our room was circular in shape, and featured floor to ceiling windows which gave us a panoramic view of Sukhumvit Road. The people walking into the Skytrain station were about 15 feet above us, and had a perfect angle to look in and watch us shooting our game. More than a couple of people actually waved as they walked past.
In addition to the pool table, the VIP room includes a personal attendant to rack balls and get drinks or food for players. Her name is posted on the wall so you don’t forget it. Our server was Rat, and she was highly attentive and had a very tight rack (the pool balls… not her rack).
The table was large (6 feet long?) and marble smooth with perfect cushions and a good roll. The house cues were in good condition and a useful weight. I played some of the best pool I’ve played in years, mainly due to the quality of the equipment.
Previously my favorite pool bar in Bangkok was the Red Parrot in Patpong, but it was always an excursion to travel over there. Sports Academy is just next to Asok station, so if you’re in the Sukhumvit area its perfect.
We played pool for two hours, and drank bottles of beer freely as we played. We bought drinks for three girls along the way. I think the bill was in the neighborhood of 1,400 baht.
If you like to play pool, you’ll love the Sports Academy.
