Purely by coincidence I also recently met two guys living in northern Thailand who play online poker for a living, so there must be a few out there coz I don’t get out a lot.

Some folks like me, though, start yawning after 30 mins playing cards. If that’s you too, then you might need to consider some alternative ways to make some money.

Your best bet? Well, there’s this book I heard about …. now what was it called ????

@Billy Bangkok: 2BB to 4BB is a solid win rate but it is measured AFTER the rake has been taken out. And BB is big bet, not big blind (bb), so in your example you are making $16 rather than $8, assuming 4BB, a big bet is 2x the big blind. Also, the $16 is a win rate per 100 hands, not per hour. I play heads up no-limit and get in about 500 hands an hour on average.

Eking’s numbers are pretty close. I played 3 hours of 1/2 NL today and paid $66 in rake. Playing heads up like I do you pay a bit more rake than at a full table.

Bickering aside, good article. I found it because I’m considering making this move next year.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If it was too good to be true but is true, smart people would keep their lips sealed.

If it is too good to be too, and it is true, and the word’s out, it’s probably not a good deal anymore. Like the tulip craze in Europe as a good example.

in falangland, i played online on a PC on PokerStars, mainly. Now I have a Mac and Im experiencing some issues downloading poker softwares from Thailand.

Any link that could help me? The restrictions seem related to anti-gambling laws in Thailand…

@Eking: Your numbers are way off. At $1/$2 a good player is expected to clear 2BB – 4BB per 100 hands. That’s $8 at the most. So, if you’re paying $16 per hour . . . . how the hell can there ever be winning players? And there are plenty of winning players. I know many. And I am certainly one myself at those limits. So how are we doing it if your numbers are correct?

The answer is, you’re numbers are incorrect.

BTW, I personally know over a dozen guys who do this for a living both in Thailand and other countries.

I would’nt find this an interesting way of making money in Thailand! If your playing poker 24/7 back at home, and REALLY making the kind of money where you could live “comfortably” in Thailand, then go ahead and do it. But as a poker player that has been playing for over 8 years live, and online, I can tell you its not as easy as you try to make it out to be. Forget Rakeback, bonus’ and loyalty points for just a moment. Do you realize how much rake you are paying playing in one of these sites? Playing a $1/$2 holdem on any site you are probably paying about, give or take, $16 per hour, meaning if your playing just 2 tables 6 hours a day your paying an average of $200 per day! Now,if your a really good player you should be able to make enough to pay the rake and even pocket some money, but to make REAL money, the kind of money youll need to live comfortably in Thailand, youll need to either play bigger games (blinds) or be a fantastic player that rarely has a bad day!
So I doubt this a GOOD way of making a living in Thailand, but hey!, do what you want!
