Given the huge cultural differences between Thailand and the West, its not surprising that what’s hot in one culture may not be all that in the other. In the two years I’ve lived in Thailand, I’ve seen guys that would be considered pretty average back home end up with super hot Thai girls. On the other hand, I’ve seen guys, who back home would do quite well, get ignored by very average Thai girls. So what’s the deal? Well, after extensive scientific investigation (read: many nights spent partying in clubs) I’ve come to the following conclusions about what’s hot or not in Thailand, which should be of use to any hopeful romantics in the country.
Thai girls want something different – but not that different
The first clue as to what Thai girls want involves looking at the other half of the Thai race: Thai men. Virtually all Thai girls in their 20’s or older will have dated at least one Thai guy in the past. The majority of Thai guys tend to be short, thin, and somewhat effeminate. Foreigners, on the other hand, tend to be taller, heavier built, and more masculine. All these factors can definitely work in the foreign man’s favor – but only in moderation. Most Thai girls want a man who is tall and strong – but not some huge body builder or muscle freak. In fact, most romantically successful foreign guys in Thailand tend to be relatively slim and effeminate compared to other foreigners – though of course larger and more masculine than the average Thai male. So if you read body building magazines and spend hours at the gym pumping iron, you might want to lay off the steroids for awhile before booking a flight to Thailand.
Case Study: The Vin Diesel type is better off staying at Home
Back in the West, a hyper masculine guy with a strong, muscular build like Vin Diesel would probably be considered very attractive to a lot of girls. Not so in Thailand. See point #1. Don’t forget that the average Thai girl is fairly short and as thin as a stick – she’d probably be terrified of someone Vin Diesel’s size! On the other hand, a guy who looks like Matt Damon – someone who is slim, strong, yet with a slightly effeminate face – would do very well in Thailand. So nurture your metrosexual side and you may have to beat off the girls with a stick.
The Clothes Make the Man
Its been written over and over again that keeping a high standard of personal hygiene and dressing with a little class does wonders for the foreign male’s chances of winning over a beautiful Thai girl. Well, most foreign guys in Thailand must be too busy downing yet another Chang to do much reading, because its amazing how poor most foreigners dress in Thailand. I’m not even referring to the neo-hippy backpackers because that’s a whole different story, but to the middle aged guys who show up to a club wearing sandals, shorts, and a Red Bull tank top. In any decent club, restaurant, or bar, the average Thai male will be wearing nice shoes, designer jeans, and a stylist dress shirt. Follow suit and you will instantly be elevating yourself above 90% of the foreigners in Thailand, and receiving much more attention from the opposite sex to boot.
Skin Color Does Matter
Its unfortunate but true: in Thailand, people are judged all the time based on skin tone. The whiter the skin, the more attractive, wealthy, and elite a person is perceived to be. Little wonder then that the supermarkets are filled with skin-whitening products, that many Thai girls will carry around an umbrella to block out the sun’s rays, and that Thai models are so pale they look like they haven’t been exposed to sunlight since they stopped wearing diapers. Therefore, a foreign male who gets a kick out of burning his skin to a crisp reddish brown on the islands before hitting the clubs in Bangkok shouldn’t be too surprised when Thai girls don’t give him a second glance. Of course, most Caucasian foreign guys who arrive in Thailand are pretty white to begin with, so as long as you don’t seek out the sun, you should be fine. On the other hand, African-Americans, Indians, and Arabs who arrive in Thailand will be at a distinct disadvantage in the dating arena due to their darker shade of skin.
Loose the Beer Gut
If there’s one physical feature that’s an almost universal turn-off to Thai girls, it’s a large beer belly. Of course, loosing weight is easier said than done, and poor genes or a slowing metabolism sure don’t help. Neither does the widespread availability of cheap beer in Thailand or that huge portion of bangers’n’mash at your favorite expat restaurant. However, by following a few simple tips, it can be relatively easy to stabilize your weight or even drop a few pounds in Thailand. First off, if you must drink, better stick with whiskey & soda rather than the ubiquitous beer, which is heavy in calories. Secondly, Thai eateries generally serve meals of smaller portions and fewer calories than the typical gut-busting fare of an expat restaurant, so eat local and you’ll be shedding the pounds in no time. Fitter guys appear younger, healthier, and generally more desirable to Thai girls, so control your weight and notice the difference in the attention you receive from the Thai ladies.
When All Else Fails
Some of you readers must be thinking about the time (probably numerous times) you walked down a street in Bangkok and saw an old, overweight foreigner with zero fashion sense being escorted by a beautiful Thai girl half his age. Doesn’t that scene run counter to all of the above advice? It sure does, but remember that such men are likely being escorted to the nearest jewelry shop or ATM machine in a calculated bid to slowly relieve them of their life savings. The truth is, no matter what “look” a foreign guy has or how unattractive he may be perceived by Thai girls, there will always be some uneducated girls from disadvantaged backgrounds who will be more than willing to date him provided they receive material support in return. This may be great for foreign guys who would have no chance of scoring otherwise, but also depressing for many guys who feel like they are being “used” rather than genuinely loved. However, for the foreign guys out there who are looking for a beautiful, classy Thai girl that’s genuinely interested in true romance, then take the advice in this article to heart and you may very well find the girl of your dreams in Thailand.

I can find nothing to object to in your statement above for the most part, but I do think when people make generalizations it is implied that there are exceptions, and if there is a doubt, one should ask if the person recognizes there are exceptions to his rule, instead of accusing him of being racist off the bat.

Dude, you are so wrong it’s close to comedic. Here’s what I did Wed night.
Met up with a group of friends for a few drinks after work. Being a work night people started heading home rather early. Pretty soon it was just me, my buddy, and a female Thai friend of ours. Her body language pretty much broadcast she was up for something with my friend so I made no effort to cock-block when the two of them said they were going to another bar. Instead I jumped in a taxi and called an ex-gf and asked her if she wanted to come by my place and watch a movie (code word for a booty call). She said she was up for it and spent the night.
Total cost for me: 2 wine coolers
Total cost for my buddy: Maybe 3 or 4 orange juices
And guess what? Neither of us is aryan!!! Both of us are dark haired. And neither of us looks like Brad Pitt or JFK. We’re pretty average looking guys.

And that’s not a one-off. I have four gigs that I can call pretty much whenever I want who I’ve never paid any money to other than a meal, a movie, taxi fare, or routine gifts (birthdays, Xmas, etc). Plus I have girls I date, new girls I meet, and an occasional blast from the past when I run into a girl I used to date or was a gig but we haven’t seen each other in months.
I’m not saying any of that to impress anyone. I only want to make it clear that the major difference between you and me is that I have game. If I went out with that defeatist attitude and negative views towards women I might be stuck having to pay for it too. Do you really think you don’t reek of negativity when you go out? No matter how much you smile people give off vibes about their true character. Until you can change what’s inside of you you’re going to keep getting the same results.
Having game means being able to exude self-confidence. Being self-confident is far more attractive to women than hair color or looks.
Not machismo but true self-confidence. Feeling the need to call women bitches is the opposite of self-confidence because you need to bring people down for you to feel good about yourself. The same thing goes for being needy and/or putting women on a pedestal since it shows you already see yourself in a subservient role.

I have been in Thailand for many years and definitely Thai ladies dislike fat and dark guys, the belly is really out…
But also It depends on yourself, if you speak Thai and you know how Thai girls are, you have many more chances than a newbye who spends days with a girl thinking about conquesting her slowly while she gets bored and offended coz the guy never invited her to sleep together.
I know straight away when a Thai girl likes me or not and if it is yes, at 99.9% of the cases I will have her sleeping with me at the first date, sometimes even 10 minutes after meeting her and before asking her name.
In Thailand if a girl likes you, 99% of the cases she expects to end the night with you at the first date. It is so easy. If you speak Thai and know how to get to the lady (very easily indeed), it is a piece of cake.

Same religion, same culture. No culture shock. Now, now, not ALL girls went for me. I had my fair share of rejection too. But quite a few went for me. Based on my Indo-aryan handsome looks. I’m not here to make generalizations but I do know that 7 or 8 out of 10 Thai women I speak to openly speak negatively about Indians. They think your food stinks and so do the Indian people. Literally, I’ve had that said to me – flat out – on several occasions.
I’m not saying it’s true. I’m just telling you what Thai people commonly say. Obviously not to your face. But it even shocks me some of the outright racists things I’ve heard Thai people say about Indians.
It doesn’t mean you have 0 chance, but it’s not like women are falling over backward with their feet in the air for you guys either. Plus you guys seem to be overly represented in tales of trying to bar fine one girl to service 3 or 4 of your buddies on the same tip.
Even a story in a recent magazine article had a mention of a Thai girl who was cornered by two Indian guys as she got off the BTS and asked if she would go back with them for a threesome (she was an office gal, and not a hooker).
Like I said, I have nothing against Indian guys. I’ve even spent time working in India. No problems. And I have Indian friends over here who are pissed at the image that some of their countrymen have created about Indians in Thailand.
In fact, just a few months ago there was a huge uproar about some Indians being thrown out of a bar in Pattaya for . . . being Indian. The owner didn’t want them in his bar and the girls didn’t want to service them.
So, please don’t try to make Indian’s out to be suave guys with the same religion (Hindi is very different from Thai Buddhism) and looking just like them. Even my best Indian friends living here would laugh at that suggestion.
Everybody has an image attached to them when they arrive here. Thais only know “our people” from those who have came before us. If Italians are known for being cheap and Brits for being rowdy drunks then without knowing you many Thai people are going to assume you to be the same.
At the moment, Indian’s don’t have a good reputation. It’s not that you can’t hook up with anybody here but that you have to find the girls willing to look past the stereotype.

@khaek: Let’s put it this way . . . If you asked 100 Thai women if they would rather marry a farang or an Indian what do you think the percentages would be? I’m being very generous if I gave Indians 20%.
Sorry, in a recent poll over 50% of Issan girls (grade school age) said they hoped to marry a farang. So, within the realm of women who don’t want to marry Thai almost all of them are set on a white westerner.
Then again, a good friend of mine who is Indian is going out with a smoking hot Thai girl. It’s not impossible but love, like everything else in life, is a numbers game.
All the author of this piece is saying is that here are the things that appeal to the mass market. I don’t think he said you can never, ever, ever get a girl if you don’t meet these standards. What he said was that if you meet these standards your success rate goes up considerably.
I know plenty of African, India, Muslim, etc men who are hooked up with Thai girls. Some are married, some have had long-term relationships, some have only been going out awhile but seem to be deeply in love. It’s not a matter of impossible. It’s a matter of what increases your odds.
Personally, I fail on several of the author’s criteria. Shave a decade off of me and give me back my six-pack abs and I’m sure my phone would ring far more often than it does now. But it doesn’t mean the phone doesn’t ring at all.

@katechon: Not really sure that is different from other girls. I can’t say that I know many girls who like guys with flab (and I have some flab so . . . I know).
As far as the hair goes . . . not sure I can agree. If you look at some of the Thai soap or music stars they don’t exactly have crew cuts.

@ Ruai : No crew cuts indeed, but as i wrote, the hairs of actors or singers are always extremely well shaped, well “groomed” (if that’s the right word!). Must take a lot of time or a special skill to shape it!
Re Indians: I’ve been several months, several times in India (Karnataka and Kerala, mostly). Great people, great land (although they tend to spit profusely, which I still find disgusting). Yet many Indians I’ve encountered here, in Bangkok, are… loud and stinky. Many! Whereas the Thai are quiet and discreet on the nose.
Many barwhores pinched their nose with disdain when they talk about Kegs, Indians being included here. Smells like many of them don’t how about deodorants…
Again, it’s not like this in India, where I’ve been and worked anyway. They’re clean there (on their own person anyway; streets and buildings are another matter!!!).
But here, in the BTS, and the Mall, it seems they favour stained shirts and a *natural* sweaty smell!

Thais often have a hard time distinguishing between their culture and their religion because the two are so intertwined. Show me Buddha’s teachings on racism. Show me where Buddha said to kill the Indian. You can’t because it’s not part of the religion. In fact, if you know anything about Buddhism you would see how anti-Buddhist that joke is.
It is part of the culture though. Many Thais are racist, xenophobic, and ultra-nationalists. Just because they also happen to be Buddhist doesn’t make any of those other things part of Buddhism.
But don’t get me wrong, I’ve heard the same joke said about other people too and it’s worth a chuckle or so. I’m not standing up for Indians. I’m sure they have their own racist jokes too.

@khaek: I think you need to learn the definition of racism. Just because a religion believes that their way is the only way does not make them racist. For instance, there are black, brown, yellow, and white Christians. Same as for Muslims. And even in Judaism people can convert (though they don’t do a lot of recruiting like Christians and Muslims so they don’t get very many).
Racism is discrimination based on race. Obviously none of the religions you called racist do that so by definition they are clearly not racist. You can have racist Christians but Christianity is not in itself racist.
The original topic of this thread is fairly accurate because it really speaks of the human nature to a certain extent. Most women, any where, like a handsome clean successful man. Thai women do like a a lighter skin farang but I have seen some handsome white farangs who behaved like a**holes and got rejected by average looking thai women. I saw that in malls and in bars. I also have seen very handsome frangs handle thai girls in bars in a very discussting manner where they try to stick their fingers in, well you know where and of course some girls will put up with it and some will not. So, if you are a farang and you present yourself in an respectful way, you will have a better chance to date and go with beautiful thai girls. The question that beckones to be answered, all things being equal, would an beautiful thai lady of , say 25-30 years of age go out with a farang or thai. Again, all things being equal; status, money, looks (lets say both are 7-8 out of 10)….

In my opinion skin color is the only thing to be successful in all areas of life you just have to be white in thailand and thats why I am leaving of course you can get the work and the girls if you are not white but its going to take alot longer. Do I think thai people are racist no I dont not by their standards but I do believe they are by american standards to get a job you must give a photo and submit your height and weight thai people often over exposse their photos to make themselves whiter.

Why should Indians even care what the Thais think of them. They are one of the prettiest people I have seen (there are hideous indians too); afterall Indians won the Miss World competition more than any other nation in this planet. And to me personally (I am Asian), I find we are not that pretty of a race. I know how much we try to be like Caucasians…even we try to make our eyes bigger using glue (lol). Not that it should matter what a Caucasian thinks…but a white friend of mine told me that he finds Indian girls a million times attractive than Asian girls…and he thinks that the Caucasians who settle for Asians are either gay guys (closeted) or wants a submissive partner (quite offensive for me) …but its true an Asian girl will do anything to get a white guy… And yes, I am really happy with my Indian boyfriend…the best looking guy both inside and outside I have dated (I have dated guys of almost all races). Like someone said earlier, it is basically a numbers game. I had in 3 weeks, 3 -4 stunners, throwing themselves at me, (NON_working girls) and I got rejected 3 times. Winsome loose some. I understand, phillipines is even better, numbers wise. for farangs, the religion/culture is roman catholic. But I prefer thailand. MY culture. My only regret, I should have visited it earlier, what you call in the west as gap year. I would have planned my career differently, retired early and settled in heaven on earth – thailand.
Well I must say Khaek, your comments are spot on! I fully agree as I’m going through/have been through the same experiences as you. I think if you go to Thailand with an open mind and are willing to research the culture and learn a bit of Thai you will be more respected. Many of my friends that already live in Thailand have said the same “wish I had done this 10 years earlier”. The difficult decision now is do you sell up and retire over their because once you are off the property ladder there is no easy way back after living in Thailand for a few years.

May be Italian do not spend money for women who only use them and cheat them, while mostly of other farangs in Thailand are so naive to be “not cheao” but to spend money a lot of money for women who are not worth so much and for women only looking how to take your money away with a smile.
